What is The Frommer Society?

The Frommer Society is a series of public lectures and panel discussions presented throughout each academic year. NOCA faculty members and guest speakers fearlessly explore topics across the full range of human experience – politics, religion, ethics, literature, history, art, music, and more. Marked by curiosity, honesty, and civility, these intellectually engaging conversations are a wonderful opportunity for anyone to partake in the rich classical approach to learning NOCA students enjoy every day.

MARCH 27

The Founding Fathers and the Apostate Emperor

Dr. Stephen Froedge will be examining what the Founding Fathers thought about Julian the Apostate, the last “pagan” emperor. After the conversion of Constantine, many Romans embraced the growing, new religion called “Christianity,” but Julian preferred the old ways. He attempted to rejuvenate the increasingly obsolete worship of the pantheon of Greco-Roman gods. Was it an act of noble Roman conservativism, or simply misguided stuffiness? In their correspondence, John Adams and his son make multiple references to Emperor Julian and his attempt at religious interference.

Who is Dr. Morris Frommer?

The lecture is named for long-time friend of NOCA, Dr. Morris Frommer, whose contributions of time, talent, and treasure have significantly fortified the school’s intellectual culture throughout its formative years. Dr. Frommer has spent time in the classroom tutoring, substitute teaching, and even occasionally lecturing on American history. Over and above the financial support he and his wife Barbara have provided, many of the history books in NOCA’s Upper School library came from Dr. Frommer’s personal collection.
